Lighting and Staging an Interview

My live blog notes from the videos we watched in class:

  • it doesn't take much to make a movie (camera and subject)
  • composition- how you show your audience what you choose to show them.
    • comes from the rule of thirds
  • rule of thirds helps stick the interesting things at the intersection of the lines. Its a guide.
  • the 180 degree rule is put your camera above or below the imaginary line between two people, but not both
  • rules were made to be broken, but following rules makes you cool
  • the 180 rule made the film look less congested
    • went from ones characters left shoulder to the others right shoulder
    • basically helps show the viewers that the characters are looking at each other
  • in interviews, you should diffuse your light source to flatten your subject. (soft).
  • whats in the frame, what the viewers see (misenscene).
  • nose room- more space in front of the persons nose
  • head room- eye 2/3 of a away in the frame, your head does not need a lot of head room
    • use rule of thirds
    • don't cut off someones chin
  • watch those hands so they aren't popping in and out of the frame all the time (breaking the frame)
  • backgrounds are important in defining the subject just like their own words
    • be creative
  • 3 point lighting set up
    • key light (brightest & most important)
      • our left and high to create shadows and create shape on the face
    • fill light (helps key light)
      • adds light to the frame that are in shadow from key light
    • back light
      • lights the back of the subject
      • separates the subject from the background
